Epilepsy is describedas a disorder of the brain that includesrecurring, spontaneous seizures considered to be as a chronic neurological ailment. These seizures are caused due to unusual chemical and electrical activity inside the brain. Seizures can occur due to some problem anywhere inside the brain due to multiple reasons.Epilepsy surgery is a surgical procedure that involves removal of tumor that causes seizures inside the brain. Conditions of Epilepsy are diagnosed through below tests
Neurological examination includes test related toyour actions, motor skills, mental ability and other areas that help in determining the type of epilepsy you may have.
Blood tests helps to check for signs of infections, genetic disorders or other illnesses that may be linked with seizures.
Electroencephalogram (EEG) help in recording the electrical activity of your brain.
Computerized tomography (CT) scan can reveal abnormalities in your brain that might be causing your seizures, such as tumors, bleeding and cysts.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helps to detect lesions or abnormalities in your brain that are causing seizures.
Functional MRI (fMRI) helps in measuring the changes in blood flow that occur in specific parts of your brain and it also helps to identify the exact sites of critical functions, such as speech and movement.
Positron emission tomography (PET) helps in determining active areas of the brain and detect deformities.
Single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) to see the origin of seizures.

Treatments for Epilepsy:

The majority of epileptic seizures are controlled through medications. Diet is also used as a part of epilepsy treatment along with medicines. In cases wheremedicines and diet do not work, a surgery may be required. The type of treatment prescribed by the doctor completely depends on factors like the occurrence and severity of the seizures, the person's age, overall health condition, and medical history.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is a therapy suggested when medicines are unable to control epilepsy seizures. During the surgical procedure, an electrical device is inserted below the skin. The lead of this device is surrounded on one of the nerves present in the left side of the neck. This nerve is known as vagus nerve. This device helps in continuously passing of electric dose to the nerve in order to stimulate it. This process helps in reducing the severity and occurrence of the seizures.

Ketogenic Diet is also considered as one of the best treatments for epilepsy condition. Ketogenic diet is suggested for children as it includes eating a diet low in proteins and carbohydrates and high in fats. Eating this kind of diet will alter the chemical balance of the brain and reduces the chance of recurring seizures. Ketogenic diet is not prescribed for adults as this type of diet in adults can result in any other medical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure or strokes.

Other types of Epilepsy surgeries are
Anteromedial Temporal Lobectomy
Selective Amygdalohippocampectomy
Electrocorticography guided Resections
Multiple Subpial transections
Quadrantic Resections
Multilobar Resections
Functional Hemispherotomy
Vagal Nerve stimulation
Radiosurgery (selected cases)
